My Why

Throughout my nursing career, I always felt like I didn't quite fit in because I didn't have a desire to work in a hospital setting. Although I did secure my first nursing job at Mount Sinai, one of NYC's top hospitals, I knew deep down that I would eventually transition to a different area of nursing. My true passion was to work directly with patients in a more relaxed and personal environment. I grew tired of witnessing patients when it was too late to cure them.

However, I did not have the support to explore other nursing options from those around me.

It's challenging to step into the unknown, especially when others depend on you. I constantly heard comments like, "Why don't you want to work in a hospital? That's what nurses do," or "Nurses aren't entrepreneurs," or even "Why don't you pursue a Ph.D. and find happiness that way?"

Here’s the thing, I love being a Nurse, I thoroughly enjoyed providing care to individuals and putting in diligent effort. However, the specific work atmosphere was just not quite what I expected. Initially, I believed that my primary responsibility as a nurse was to provide care for the sick and prevent illness. However, I gradually noticed that people were becoming increasingly unwell, and many of their conditions seemed preventable to some extent. The frequent floats to the ER to cover shifts where I encountered the same patients repeatedly, for issues that could have been prevented with a more holistic approach, or the absence of adequate healthcare follow-up and patient knowledge, made it feel like the healthcare system was stuck in a cycle.

Instead of remaining in an environment that didn't align with my values, I decided to transition into Community Health Nursing where I felt the one-on-one approach made my work more satisfying.

As I progressed into management positions, I realized the pressing need for nurses in administrative roles. It was frustrating to work with healthcare institution leaders who lacked clinical backgrounds and couldn't grasp the importance of good clinical outcomes, the importance of qualified staff, or the gaps in care that could be prevented with the implementation of proper processes. To familiarize myself with the homecare industry regulations, I consulted with professionals, conducted extensive research, and collaborated with state departments. I was constantly fixing, working, and striving for improvement, determined to ensure healthcare institutions avoid these issues. Through self-reflection and seizing opportunities, I gained a reputation for "cleaning up," "fixing," and successfully implementing and sustaining change in healthcare settings.

My journey into operations and consulting began in 2011 when I assisted an acquaintance in establishing his first home care business which was motivated by the need to provide proper care for his aging mother. In this role, I dedicated my time to comprehending the rules and regulations of the homecare industry. Countless hours were spent researching and collaborating with state departments to gain a thorough understanding of the step-by-step process involved in building and operating a home care business in New York State. 

Throughout this process, I noticed a significant gap in home care operations and management, which, combined with my nursing background, became even more apparent. Having worked for various agencies, including licensed homecare, certified home health agencies, and managed long-term care insurance plans, I consistently observed deficiencies in service delivery, quality of care, management skills, executive training, and policy implementation. Witnessing the negative impact on patient care, I got tired of witnessing the poor execution of business and clinical operations that were directly impacting patient care.

Drawing upon my knowledge and expertise, I established Emmanuel Consulting Agency Inc., a consulting firm aimed at assisting C-level executives who struggle in the healthcare industry. Since then, I have been dedicated to helping health care entrepreneurs and healthcare organizations effectively start, grow, and manage their healthcare businesses. With my background as a nurse, I have a natural inclination to support fellow nurses in finding their true passion and transforming it into a viable business.

My goal is to empower nurses to work smarter, not harder, and discover their unique niche. I firmly believe that if more nurses owned and operated more healthcare organizations, we would have a health care system built on compassion, high quality, better patient outcomes and experiences. Nurses are equipped to lead, manage, and provide high level care. My goal is to empower more nurses and equip them with confidence and business strategy to own health care organizations that flourish.

Recognizing the importance of having a knowledgeable and dependable consultant, particularly for BIPOC entrepreneurs, I strive to be the ally they need on their entrepreneurial journey.
